July 13, 2011 – The FDA released a warning about the use of mesh for correction of pelvic organ prolapse repair. Key point about this statement is that Dr. Butrick fully agrees with the warning. This warning does not apply to the use of the small strip of mesh used to treat leakage of urine. For the treatment of prolapse – especially for a fallen bladder – mesh can improve success of your repair, but at the expense of a high rate of complications. The FDA states that most prolapse repairs can be done without mesh. The FDA also stressed the importance of physician training/experience if the procedure is used, and Dr. Butrick has more experience than any physician in the Kansas City area in the use of mesh. March 2011 – Dr. Charles Butrick was one of four faculty members at a lunch symposium on neuromodulation at the annual meeting of Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU). Every year for the last five SUFU meetings, he has been asked to speak on various topics including pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, neurotoxin use in bladder control and vulvodynia.
December 2010 – Dr. Butrick has been working with colleagues from around the world as he was asked to be the senior editor for a supplemental dedicated to neuromodulation for the International Urogynecology Journal. After more than 18 months of work by his colleagues and himself, their work was published and is now considered a contemporary resource for any physicians doing neuromodulation for pelvic floor disorders. As editor, he wrote the foreword and an article about patient selection.
November 2010 – Dr. Butrick was asked to be part of the faculty for a webinar sponsored by American Urogynecology on the topic of Sacral Neuromodulation. He and one other physician taught a group of physicians over the internet who wanted to learn more about this exciting therapy for urge incontinence, frequency and even urinary retention.
October 2010 – Dr. Butrick was asked to speak on the subject of Interstitial Cystitis at the International Pelvic Pain Society’s meeting in Chicago. It was attended by several hundred physicians and physical therapists from around the world. He will be speaking at a symposium in Istanbul, Turkey in May 2011 on the same topic.
September 2010 – Dr. Butrick was one of three physicians asked to teach a post-graduate course on Sacral Modulation at the American Urogynecology Society’s annual meeting in Los Angeles, CA. He was one of the first physicians in the United States to use the technique of nerve stimulation to combat various bladder disorders. In fact, for the first few years after the InterStim was given FDA approval, Dr. Butrick was one of the main faculty educators involved in teaching hundreds of physicians about neuromodulation.
August 2010 – Dr. Butrick taught a surgical course using a new sling produced by Gynecare called TVT-Abbrevo. Dr. Butrick one of the first physicians in the United States to learn this new sling and taught at the International Continence Society’s meeting in Toronto, Canada. He now has physicians coming to his OR on a regular basis every three to four weeks from around the country to learn from him.
